Malcolm Wilson is a senior coach and educator with 17 years of experience managing all aspects of Premier League Football Club community programs within a region, including 4 years at Fulham FC coaching in the Clubs academy. Malcolm is currently a Vermont Soccer Association staff coach, working with both the ODP program and being a State license instructor.

“I am excited for VPS to be able to employ someone of Malcolm’s caliber. He has showed a commitment to the game by obtaining the highest coaching licenses possible. He holds his USSF A license, USSF National Youth license, National Goalkeeping license and UEFA B License. His knowledge of the game and experience in running programs at all levels will be a huge asset to VPS and the soccer players in Vermont” said Baber.

“We are very fortunate to have Malcolm as our Technical Director and his experience and local knowledge will help us shape the programs we offer to cater for both coaches and players alike in Vermont” Baber added.

Iain Manson, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland has over ten years coaching experience in New England, New Jersey and the UK. Iain joined GPS in 2009 when he first worked for Mass Premier Soccer. He was transferred to Maine Premier Soccer in 2010, utilizing his administrative and organizational skills as both Academy then Finance Director. Through his previous roles Iain has become familiar with all multi-faceted aspects and logistics of running a successful Premier Club.

“Iain has shown that he has both quality coaching and administrative skills. He has been an integral part of making Maine Premier soccer a huge success and now the biggest Soccer club in Maine. While he will be sorely missed from Maine he was the logical choice when I looked at who had the experience and knowledge to help spearhead VPS. He understands how to run successful programs, working with local youth soccer groups and combing his ability along with those qualities Malcolm Wilson brings will give VPS a very experienced management team”. On the field Iain coached a variety of ages in both NEP, State Cup and USL SYL on both the boys and girls side and had consecutive High School Fall Seasons at Greely HS. Iain currently holds a USSF License, NSCAA National Youth Diploma and Scottish Football Association Level 3 license.

On a night that was marred with constant rain, Phoenix were put on the back foot and to the test from kick off. Brooklyn Italians were able to capitalize fully through three set pieces. Two of those like flash floods in the first 7 minutes of the game.  Rhino Nathaniel Simons headed in Oscar Castillo’s corner kick and was followed up two minutes later with a second when a Christian Turizo free kick beat Phoenix keeper Ciaran Nugent.

Phoenix were able to get into the game and after recovering some composure, settled into a rhythm and were able to keep the ball. Especially in the second half, Phoenix fought from behind but despite the chances and the midfield started to dominate, Phoenix were unable to score.

Jumol Harewood increased the Brooklyn lead to 3 goals in the 79th minute, when his free kick from 25 yards slipped inside the left post. Phoenix rallied and less than a minute later, left back Blaike Woodruff scored to make it 3-1. In the 90th minute, Woodruff looked to double his tally. He volleyed Nano Short’s pass beating Rhino keeper Nathan Stockie to make it 3-2 giving the Italians a nervy final couple of minutes.

The game finished as a 3-2 loss with the Brooklyn Italians progressing to a second-round match on May 22^nd against the Rochester Rhino’s. That winner will play a top-tier Major League Soccer club.

Reflecting on the slow start Phoenix Coach Paul Baber stated "Mistakes were the difference. We’ve only got ourselves to blame… On the balance of the game we had so much possession, I wouldn’t say we had hundreds of chances, but I think if we’d have played five times we’d win 4 of 5. However we dug ourselves a hole by going down 2-0."

"Being the first club from Maine to be involved in the Open Cup is a tremendous achievement," Baber said. "We’re proud to be in it but very disappointed to be knocked out so early, especially when we believe we were the better team. All we can concentrate on now is that we have the same results in the regular season so that we put ourselves in this position next year and take it a step further at least."

The MCU Portland Phoenix Strikers (U12 boys took to the Westbrook Middle school field with the opportunity to move forward in the State Cup bracket.  The game started poorly for the Strikers as they gave up a breakaway goal within the first 3 minutes of the start.

Answering 2 minutes later Ben Wheaton hit a driven ball from the top of the 18 yard box.  A controversial penalty kick on a throw in put Seacoast ahead 2-1. Wheaton tied the game again.  As The Strikers pressed forward for the leading goal Seacoast again scored a quick counter assisted from a goalie punt.  As half neared  Cam Scott took an entry pass from Robert Ochan beat 2 defenders and tucked the ball neatly in the left side panel to even the score as half ended

During half the Strikers made some key adjustments, Benny Mugabo was given the assignment of marking a Seacoast Player who had scored 2 out of three first goals from breakaways.   With the ability to play balls over the top taken away The Seacoast offense was stifled for the 2^nd half.

A corner kick put the Strikers ahead for the first time.  As MPS put more and more pressure on the Seacoast defense many near misses came and went as Kevin Ly and Will Morton served up crosses from the wings .Leo Paterniti from his Central defender spot , finally  cracked a bent ball into the front post that the keeper could not handle and ricocheted into the net.

With a two goal lead The Strikers bolstered their defense as Harrison Butler, Sean Moore, Griffin Conley and Sam Burghardt  parked the bus on the 18 yard line smothering any faint chances Seacoast had for a late game comeback.

Max Winson added a clean sheet for 2^nd half in goal the now State Cup Semifinal bound Strikers. The 5-3 victory sets ups a derby of sorts Between the Strikers and the MPS Phoenix Elite.

The Elite team later Sunday secured their ticket to move forward with a 7-2 victory over Black Bear United.

The two clubs will continue a relationship that began in 2010, with a focus on player development and domestic player recruiting, as well as expanding brand awareness for both clubs throughout North America.

The Rowdies have placed several players on the Portland Phoenix roster over the past two seasons for further evaluation and development. Past Rowdies trialists that have played with the Phoenix include midfielder Kyle Clinton, goalkeeper Will Dieterich, defender Brian Fekete, defender Ryan Griffin and goalkeeper Ryan Thompson.

The Phoenix has first team status within the MPS organization, which previously fielded the Cape Cod Crusaders (Crusaders) PDL franchise. The Crusaders had a long and outstanding reputation of success after winning back-to-back national championships in 2002 and 2003. The Crusaders also established themselves as one of the leading clubs for moving players into the professional ranks in the United States and Europe.

The Phoenix currently competes in the PDL Eastern Conference within the Northeast Division along with clubs such as the Ottawa Fury, Vermont Voltage and New Hampshire Phantoms. In 2011, the Phoenix won the PDL Northeast Division title and will be playing the first round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup against the Brooklyn Italians of the NPSL on May 15.

“Global Premier Soccer has had success at all amateur levels and in the PDL,” said Rowdies President/General Manager Andrew Nestor. “The Portland Phoenix and head coach Paul Baber have a similar vision and method for player development which we have refined since 2010, and will help the Rowdies recruit from the college ranks and also further develop players for the Rowdies first team.”

AS Roma is undergoing a restructuring under new American ownership with the goal of establishing Roma as a global brand and securing a regular spot in the UEFA Champions League.

GPS, who currently operate youth soccer programs in eight states, has become a leading source of US Youth National team players in recent years with two GPS players currently in the U-15 National team and three players developed by GPS selected to the US U-17 Residency program in recent years.

The agreement will include access to the AS Roma curriculum and will be unique in providing Academy programming that will identify the best U11 and U12 players in certain regions.  The existing GPS Inner-City initiatives will be co-branded with Roma and will become part of the exciting Roma Academy program that will be offered at no cost to participants.

Locally, here in Portland, the GPS / Roma Inner-City Initiative in conjunction with the Portland Housing Authority is already underway. The program started 5/7/2012 and will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4-5:30pm at Fox Street Field, Portland.  

“The agreement with AS Roma presents a tremendous opportunity for GPS players to touch a leading European soccer club,” said GPS CEO Joe Bradley.  “We hope to make this a ground breaking venture that goes beyond what European clubs have done in the past in the US market.  With the commitment to the inner city program, the ability to offer Roma Academies for the very best players at no cost and the technical support provided, we believe we have something special.”

Roma has already confirmed a summer tour of the US with games at Fenway Park on July 25^th sandwiched between games in Chicago and New York.  GPS will provide a supporting role in promoting the tour.

The Falmouth Community Parks held up reasonably well after the prolonged rain. From the first whistle, on a soggy field, the Phoenix possessed the ball and drove forward into the Strikers half. To build on the previous weeks performance, the girls were asked to really focus on their shape and to look to pass the ball to maximize the wide field.

The majority of the play was dominated by the Home side although South Portland did have a couple of chances in front of goal and had an effort cleared off the line by the Phoenix defense. South Portland had soaked up some pressure and when they won the ball looked to make a contest of the game.

Phoenix had some positive 1v1 runs and looked to take on the Strikers and get forwards regularly. While there were some creative individual goals, it was good to see some player combinations to goal. Coach Manson spoke to the girls and asked them to focus on moving the ball away form the South Portland pressure, with the task of scoring off a two player give and go. There was evidence of strong supporting play from Phoenix. Emily Ginter showed great awareness and repeatedly looked to play away from pressure and unselfishly allowed others to get the ball in open areas. An example was a corner played into Emily, which she turned and passed to Paige Quilty to score. A number of goals were scored on the day. Scorers included Lauren Jordan, Emily Byrne, Devin Quinn, Madison Boothby, Catriona Gould, Cecilia Ritter, Paige Rinaldi, Paige Quilty, Lam Zimet and Emily Ginter. In this game the Phoenix Tango were also able to keep a clean sheet.

Other highlights from the Girls program this weekend in the State Cup Group Stages include: U14 Girls Elite won 1-0 vs CMU, Renae Staples with a vital save in the last minute of the game to deny the opposition an equalizer, ensuring maximum points for the teams state cup campaign. U12 Girls Elite 4-2 won vs Seacoast Manchester United with a goal for Meghana Clere and a hat-trick from Sara Barrett. U15 Girls Premier tied 1-1 vs Velocity u15 girls, Madison Bolduc scored the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game to keep dreams alive of making the state cup semi-finals. U17G also had success beating Velocity 4-1.

In the NEP, our U15G Elite chalked up two victories winning 1-3 against Seacoast United Phantoms and 5-3 against FC Greater Boston Bolts with two great team performances.

GPS Portland Phoenix will host Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) at Memorial Field, Deering High School; Portland, Maine on Tuesday May 15th at 8:00 pm. The winner will face Rochester Rhinos (USL PRO) in the Second Round

The 99th edition of the U.S. Open Cup includes a 64-team field, which represents the largest in the modern era (1995 to present), eclipsing the previous record of 42 teams set in 2005 and 2006.

All Division I, II and III professional clubs are participating in the tournament proper for the first time ever. The Division I field includes all 16 U.S.-based Major League Soccer teams, which is double the representation from the past five years and the first time since 2006 that all Division I teams will take part. Meanwhile, all six U.S.-based North American Soccer League teams (Division II) and all 10 U.S.-based USL PRO teams (Division III) complete the balance of the 32 professional sides competing (also a modern record). This 2012 competition marks the first year that clubs representing the NASL will participate in America’s oldest national soccer tournament.

The amateur entries feature 32 teams from various leagues with the U.S. Adult Soccer Association (including USASA regional qualifiers, the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League and the National Premier Soccer League) and US Club Soccer.

All 2012 U.S. Open Cup matches until the final are scheduled for Tuesdays, with the championship taking place on either Tuesday, Aug. 7, or Wednesday, Aug. 8. In the first round, 32 amateur-level sides are paired geographically, with the restriction that teams from the same qualifying pool (meaning USASA regional qualifiers, PDL and NPSL) cannot be paired. The first-round winners face Division II or Division III clubs in the second round based on geographic proximity. Second-round winners play Division I clubs in the third round, matched on a geographic basis.

The opening portion of the U.S. Open Cup schedule will occur in rapid fashion as the first four rounds take place in back-to-back weeks from May 15 to June 5. The quarterfinals are set for June 26, the semifinals for July 10, and the final for Aug. 7 or 8. The majority of the tournament will have only a minimal overlap with CONCACAF Champions League play.

 The Richmond Kickers of the USL PRO have the strongest U.S. Open Cup ties among this early-round field. The Kickers won the 1995 U.S. Open Cup when they were part of the USL’s Premier Development League, defeating the El Paso Patriots in a shootout following a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time. In this year’s tournament, the Kickers will either face the PDL’s Carolina Dynamo or the USASA’s Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC in the second round on May 22.

Girls U15 State Cup Group Game at Falmouth HS turf Field

This opening game of the U15G State Cup 2012 Campaign was against the same team that opposed Phoenix U15 Premier Team just 24 hours beforehand. Having already played Coach McIntyre Sparks in the previous year there was a lot of anticipation that the Phoenix would build on their positive start to the NEP season. The U15G Elite stumbled however and were to lose in a frustrating game against Clippers SC.

Phoenix had been denied the services of Mikayla Morin and Maddie Tippetts although the Phoenix had enough talent to get the ball down and play. Starting Team: Emily Mooney, Julia Richardson, Caroline Hoch, Nicole Pineau, Mairead Clonan, Ashley Gleason, Sophie Manning, Caitlin Holmquist, Marissa Martel, Emily Lewis and Georgia Babikian. Subs: Rachel Glover, Anissa Hayman, Katherine Kirk, Cara McCluskey, Ashley Moreau, Sarah Plourde and Kristina Volta.

Falmouth turf was open and exposed and the windy conditions made it difficult for either team to find a passing rhythm. The early chances, and misses, set the tone for the game. The Clippers looked to get the ball over the defenders early on and peppered the back four with the long ball. This was an effective tactic and despite some resolute defending saw eventual breakthrough towards the end of the first half.  "I think for the most part they did well where they wanted to. They were direct and repeatedly chipped away at us" said Phoenix U15G Elite Coach Manson. "We possessed the ball pretty well. At times moved it to keep possession, but the final pass and urgency maybe wasn’t there.”

Throughout the second half the Phoenix pressed for a chance equalizer as requested by Coaches Manson and Holmquist to build on and take control of the game. Despite being able to establish more pressure in more dangerous areas of the field, attacking with the wind and moving the ball well into the final third, Phoenix were unable to find a way through. Several phases of play saw Phoenix get the ball wide and into dangerous areas. Phoenix were patient and tried to build play up but lacked the clinical edge to get a quality shot off or on target.

They stumbled to get the ball past the Clippers goalie who managed to keep a clean sheet with some decent saves but in fairness was never put under any real pressure.

There were some scrambles in the Clipper goalmouth but the longer the game went on the Phoenix forwards, bolstered now in number were unable to hit the back of the net. Phoenix paid for the earlier misses. Clippers goal went unanswered leaving the Away side needing an immense performance against Blackbear United FC to keep the State Cup dream alive.

The corner can hopefully be turned. The coaches and team are looking forward to the upcoming NEP weekend before getting another bite at the State Cup and to shake off the performance

Phoenix is fortunate to have the returning services of Andrew Butterworth, Brian Fekete and Ben Havey for the new Campaign. 

Andrew Butterworth is a Midfielder from Haverhill, Mass currently playing at Holy Cross, MA. Prior to Holy Cross Butterworth played three years of varsity soccer at Central and played for IMG under-18 Development Academy Team.

Brian Fekete is a Defender from Plant City, Florida playing at Tampa University. As a Junior, Fekete received Daktronics honorable mention All-American, Daktronics first team all-region, Academic All-District honors and Second-team all-SSC. Fekete started and appeared in 13 games. As a Sophomore: All-SSC first-team, NCSAA all-South Region second-team, Daktronics all-South Region first-team and Daktronics All-American second team. He made Second-team ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA academic and the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll starting in all 22 games. As a Freshman: SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, SSC all-Tournament Team. Fekete was one of two Phoenix players to receive PDL All-Conference recognition in 2011.

Ben Havey is a midfielder / defender from Preston, England. He is returning to Phoenix for his third season. After serving as a co-captain for the Boston University men’s soccer team and earning CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American honors, graduate student Havey was named the team’s most valuable player (2010).

Ciaran Nugent from Dedham, Massachusetts. Ciaran is currently playing for Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. In 2011, Ciaran received 2^nd Team All-Mid-Atlantic Team honors after having a break-out season, ranking third in the nation in goals against average and 3^rd in the nation in save percentages. Nugent allowed just 8 goals in 18 games and 1746 minutes of action.

Hailing from Limestone College, South Carolina we welcome Jack Bailey, Larry Mahon and Keegan Ziada (formerly Limestone and Ottawa Fury) 

Jack Bailey from Welwyn, England comes to the Phoenix after being named as Honorable Mention on the Professional Development League (PDL) Team of the Week as a member of the Ocean City Nor’easters during the 2011 season. Bailey received Second Team All-Conference honors in 2011. Bailey finished fourth in Conference Carolinas with a career high 11 goals while also registering a personal best six assists during the regular season

Laurence (Larry) Mahon is a Midfielder/Defender from Kildare, Ireland. In 2011 Mahon was named NCAA Div II Men’s Soccer All-Southeast Region Team. He was also First Team All Conference and Daktonics 2^nd Team All-South Region selection.

Keegan Ziada is a Midfielder from Melbourne, Australia. In 2009 Ziada started 16 games and made 18 appearances as a midfielder with eight goals and was named second team All-Conference. In 2008: Lead the Saints with 12 assists in 18 starts as a freshman scoring five goals in 21 games and was selected third team All-Conference. 2011: Made his only season at Milwaukee a memorable one, appearing in all 18 games, making 16 starts, tallying two goals and a team-high four assists. Prior to UWM: Spent three seasons at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. ... earned Conference Carolinas All-League honors in each of his three seasons, including a first-team choice in 2010 after a 24 point (9G/6A) campaign. He was also a first-team all-region selection, playing in 45 games in his three seasons, recording 22 goals and 25 assists and was named Conference Carolinas Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010 and a three-time member of the academic all-league squad.

With connections to East Tennessee State University and having played alongside former Phoenix player Aaron Schoenfeld, the Phoenix have also signed Blaike Woodruff, Itode Fubara and Sean Hoek

Blaike Woodruff is a Midfielder / Defender from Georgetown, Texas. In 2010: Woodruff became one of four Buccaneers to play and start in all 21 games, scoring one goal while creating three assists to amass five points, earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team honors and was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.

Itode Fubara is a Midfielder from Ogbema, Nigeria. In 2010, Like Woodruff, Fubara was one of four Bucs to play and start in all 21 games and was second on the team in goals (4), assists (3), points (11) and shots (50). Fubara was third on the team with 13 shots on goal, while also notching two game-winners earning Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors and named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team where he was also acclaimed Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP honors and names Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year while selected First Team All-Conference. Fubara was the 2011 A-Sun Pre-Season player of the Year. He received 2^nd Team All-Conference accolades in 2011.

Sean Hoek is a Midfielder from Newburgh, Indiana. Now at UNC Pembroke, Hoek played two years at East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn., under Coach Scott Calabrese. During his freshman year, he played and started in all 17 games for the Buccaneers. He scored seven points on three goals and one assist. Garnered an all-conference selection and was a member of the team that made it to the semi-finals of the conference tournament. Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.

Ronaldo Vieira, a midfielder from Framingham, Massachusetts playing at Framingham State College, MA. Vieira is a player known well to the Phoenix and advanced through our MPS counterparts youth ranks representing the MPS Bulldogs program through the years. Ronaldo played out of Framingham State and was named a 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Men’s Soccer All-Star. Vieira was a first team selection by the ECAC and joins Salem State’s Rafael Santos as the only two Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men’s soccer players honored by the ECAC.

Abe Barry is a Forward from Henrietta, NY currently at Monroe Community College. Abe scored 12 goals and had 5 assist in 17 games during the 2011 Season. He was rewarded by receiving First Team Region 3 accolades.

“They’re unbelievable in the air,” Schoenfeld said. “Any chance with a header they’re putting it in.”

But if not for a growth spurt his junior year of high school, Schoenfeld today might be talking about emulating the play of someone such as Crew midfielder Eddie Gaven.

“I went from 5-8 to 6-3,” said Schoenfeld, who has since grown another inch and weighs 190 pounds. “I played outside mid before [growing]. It’s hard to imagine that at this point. I don’t like to dribble the ball at all anymore. I just like to be a hold-up player.”

The Knoxville, Tenn., native has quietly been one of the Crew’s best acquisitions this year after being released in the preseason by the expansion Montreal Impact. 

Schonfeld has madefive appearances and got the start over returning leading scorer Emilio Renteria at Philadelphia on April 14.

“He fights for every single ball,” Crew head coach Robert Warzycha said. “He is very good with both feet. He basically works, works, works. He has good size.”

Schonfeld earned his first MLS point on Saturday against Houston when he entered as a substitute and assisted Gaven’s second goal by chesting the ball back to him.

“Aaron did very well,” Gaven said. “He worked hard and created a lot of problems for their backline. He did a great job on the second goal battling and fighting.”

It was the type of play that Schonfeld, 22, said didn’t come easy after the sudden change in his frame.

“When you grow up that fast a lot of injuries happen,” he said. “I wasn’t very coordinated. I wasn’t very good at soccer for a year. I didn’t have any high offers from any big schools. I’d say that played into it a little bit. I just wasn’t used to my body back then.

“In my later years in college I started getting used to my body and understanding more my role as a big man."

Schonfeld attended East Tennessee State University, where he had 20 goals and 10 assists in 72 games. That led the Impact to select him in the second round (20th overall) in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft.

He was let go in early March and invited to train with Columbus. He signed on March 23 and made his debut off the bench the next day against Montreal.

Now, with a season-ending injury to fellow big man Tommy Heinemann, Schonfeld looks set to become a vital cog in the forward rotation.

His ascension up the depth chart has left him only a little time to contemplate that he is playing on the same field as his idol McBride, whom he’s never met.

“Sometimes it’s almost surreal but at the same time you’ve got to know you’re job is about getting better and helping the team,” Schonfeld said.

BOSTON VICTORY – The Victory have gone with a blend of local talent and international players to build their squad, with a notable addition in former New England Revolution player Andrew Sousa. Franklin Pierce standout Paul Latif, who was signed after impressing at open tryouts, could be another player to watch.

CFC AZUL – Former Monmouth standout Ryan Kinne is the big name for the Azul, who are set to be led by Southern Connecticut assistant Dave Kelly. Kinne saw selected by the New England Revolution in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and has PDL experience having played for the Central Jersey Spartans previously. Also set to line up for the Azul are Hofstra’s Greg Cumpstone and American University’s Conor Doyle.

GPS PORTLAND PHOENIX – The Phoenix return a number of players from their division-winning side of 2011, including All-Eastern Conference selections Jason Massie and Brian Fekete. Joe Thiessen also returns, as does Boston University’s Ben Havey, while Clemson’s John Murphy will also look to make an impact.

OTTAWA FURY – The Fury have Stephen O’Kane back at the coaching helm, and will be aiming to replicate his former success at the PDL level. Among their players are former Toronto FC Academy player Chad Bush, while Drew Beckie from Denver University was an all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation First Team selection last fall and should provide strength in the Fury’s defense.

SEACOAST UNITED PHANTOMS – The Phantoms reached the playoffs a season ago, and this year Ryan Dunn arrives ahead of his junior year at Boston College aiming to build on a successful fall with the Eagles. The Phantoms will also aim to draw on the experience of former New Hampshire standout Eric Masi and Brad Hilton, who had two goals and six assists for the Wildcats this past fall in his senior season.

WESTERN MASS PIONEERS – The Pioneers just missed out on the playoffs a season ago, but the club has what appears to be a strong squad returning. Chris Roswess returns for his third season after recording three goals last year, while the club has also added solid goalkeeper Warren Gross, who attended this January’s USL PRO Combine.

WORCESTER HYDRA – The Hydra have tried to stay local in building their squad, with UMass-Lowell standout Bruno Bonicontro arriving after recording three goals and a team-high six assists last fall. Rutgers’ Michael Soboff could also be one to watch as he works his way back from an injury that forced him to redshirt last fall for the Scarlet Knights.

After a long drive the SZ Phoenix began slow and soon found themselves one down to a soft goal.  The Phoenix found their feetsoon after the goal with some nice combination play through midfield from Alex Arnold, Anthony Palamountain and Charlie Goodrum.  After a succession of corners Phoenix were awarded a Penalty after a Jamestown defender handled in the area.  Alex Arnold slotted home a well taken penalty.  Borchard and Connor Friend were providing quality passed out from the back allowing the Phoenix to keep possession and the Rhode Island side camped deep in their own half.  Robert Inniss went close with a long range free kick that grazed the cross bar.

The second goal followed shortly after as Will Gibson did well to hold the ball up and set up Sifuentes for a nicely taken goal from 18 yards.  The half came to an end with the Phoenix on the front foot and growing in confidence.

The second half started in the same vein with the SZ Phoenix moving the ball well creating a good chance for Jake Hale.  As the boys pushed forward looking to extend the lead, Jamestown scored a goal against the run of play after a defensive mix up leveling the scores.  Phoenix continued to control the game getting the ball wide to Hale and the Kennedy twins who were a constant threat down the wings.  Cole Macleod provided an injection of pace up top and looked a constant threat to the Jamestown.  Riley Burrows-Brown played a long pass down the line for Hale who got in behind to test the goalkeeper with a stinging shot.

Phoenix’s pressure finally told with a fantastic solo effort from Arnold to score his second of the afternoon.  The fourth quickly followed as Sifuentes was played through and the forward finished high into the net to make the game safe for the SZ Phoenix.  The game finished 4-2 and good win for the travelling Phoenix.

Saturday 14th April saw MCU Portland Phoenix U14 Boys take on MPS Counterparts, the Knights, in a sweltering affair at Scarborough High School.

The tempo of the match was set from the 1st whistle, with MCU’s culutred possessive style of short give and go’s being a template for the remainder of the game. While this certainly gave the Phoenix an advantage in the possession stats, there was a breakdown in converting their control of the ball into goal scoring opportunities.

Finally however the deadlock was broken late into the 1st half. A well flight cross from Surafel Zunser was poorly dealt with by the Knights defence, allowing Specer Thibodeau to tap in from close range.

The 2nd half began with a bang, with the Phoneix came out the traps flying. With a new attacking 433 shape, Surafel Zunser once again created a goal with a bending cross to the front post. Josh Iriving nipped in to beat the goalie at the front post to increase the phoenix scoreline to 2-0.

With the Knights players tiring and the game becoming ever increasingly stretched, the Phoenix added their 3rd. A chipped pass from the midfield found the impressive Surafel Zunser in behind the Knights back four, who had sprung the offside trap. Surf dribbled aggressively toward goal, and then at the point of finishing, he unselfishly squared the ball to the oncoming Matt Alvarez who tapped in an easy finish.

The final goal of the game was the pick of the lot, starting with a foul on Spencer Thibodeau which resulted in a free kick 25 yards from goal. Spence stood tall over the ball and stuck it sweetly into the top right hand corner. This goal rounded off what was an impressive display from the Phoenix, and 2 star turns from Surafel Zunser and Spencer Thibodeau.

After the game coach Bain had this to say: "Excellent performance from the group today, I was especially pleased that our positive run of performances carried on today. We have worked hard on creating an identity for the group, and today we continued to build on what we have learned. Hopefully we can continue the good feeling in the group, and get a positive result again tomorrow."

Both Trevor Hoxsie and Cameron Omsberg were part of the PDL Squad in 2011. Hoxsie played in one game last summer while Omsberg played in eight. Both players are coming off a tremendous college season and are expected to play more prominent roles in the squad this summer. “Trevor is a clever forward who will cause our opposition problems this summer. He has shown he can score goals and we are hoping he can replicate his collegiate form with us. Cameron is a different type of player who has the versatility to be played at either the back or in midfield. We are expecting him to step up to the challenge and be a big part of the squads’ success this summer” said Head Coach Paul Baber.

Trevor Hoxsie - Forward from Scarborough, Maine (Roger Williams University formerly Scarborough High School). Hoxsie was named to all-conference and all-state team in 2009 and 2010 and was recipient of the Western SMAA forward of the year in 2009, He was also named all-New England and Western Maine Class A Offensive Player of the Year in 2010, finishing his High School career with 59 goals and 21 assists. Hoxsie led Scarborough to back-to-back class AA State Championships. Hoxsie was also selected to the 2011 NSCAA Division lll Men’s All-New England team Second Team. He had a great season for Roger Williams, leading every category except one for the Hawks. He finished the season with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists in only 13 games played. Of those 12 goals, five were game-winners, in addition to a hat trick against the University of New England on September 24. 

Cameron Omsberg - Defender from Belgrade, Maine (Lehigh, PA). Omsberg was a three-time All-Conference selection in four years at Messalonskee High School. He was named team captain and MVP his senior year, to go along with First Team All-State and Waterville Morning Sentinel Boys Soccer Player of the Year accolades. He also earned accolades for his academics by taking home the Class of 2009 Maine Sports Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award. Attended the 2008 Lehigh Soccer I.D. Academy before committing to Lehigh and is returning to the Phoenix was his second consecutive season. Omsberg was co-captain for Lehigh University this past fall season and was named second team All-Patriot League after a stellar campaign, an integral part of why Lehigh’s defense has been superb.

Also joining the Phoenix Pre-Season will be other local players that stood out at the recent PDL Tryout - Alex Marecki (Bowdoin College), Isaah Eagles (UMaine-Machias) Johnny Murphy (Bates College) and Theirry Gakire. The coaching staff also expects to call up a number of the clubs youth players into Pre-Season, with an Exhibition game on Wednesday the 9^th of May where a number of these potential PDL players will be on show.

Portland, ME, April 6th, 2012; MPS is proud to announce a packed Spring Soccer Program allowing kids to play soccer all year round. We have worked very hard to create these programs and are delighted to be able to offer kids the chance to play and improve their skills throughout the Spring season. As well as our April Vacation Camps we are providing a number of Soccer Schools throughout the area.

Portland, ME, April 5th, 2012; As the PDL Season approaches we will be running our annual Season Ticket Competition.  As a club we have been very successful in developing players to go onto play professionally and take great pride in this success, however, in order to run a PDL team, we need full support from our players and families. 

The PDL league is the top developmental men’s league in North America which features 73 teams within four conferences across the United States and Canada. The PDL season consists of 16 regular season matches for each team, eight home and eight away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility. In addition to league play, PDL teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various exhibitions. The PDL has proven to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals now playing throughout the world.

MPS will be offering a unique competition for the start of their 2012 PDL campaign.  We will be asking all MPS players and MPS teams to show their support for the PDL team by helping us with a season ticket T-Shirt drive. The PDL team is an essential part of the club and is at the top of our development pyramid.  Last year alone we have pushed two players into the MLS with players joining the Columbus Crew and the LA Galaxy.  We have also passed players onto USL pro teams and professional teams in Europe - without the support of our players and families this would not have been possible.

In order for the team to be a success and perform we need all of the parents and player to support our future professional players and come and watch our home games. The team/player that’s can drum up the most support for the PDL team will win one of the great prizes below:-

The Phoenix acquired their PDL franchise rights from the now-defunct Cape Cod Crusaders - the PDL national champions in 2002 and 2003 who left the league at the end of the 2008 season. In 2010 the MPS Portland Phoenix was born out of Portland Maine. The Phoenix team played its first official game on May 9, 2010, with a 3-0 victory over the Westchester Flames in the USL Premier Development League (PDL). Making history, the first goal in franchise history was scored by Chris Banks on a windy day at Deering High School.

Part of the larger Global Premier Soccer (GPS) organization the franchise will play under the banner GPS Portland Phoenix for the 2012 Season and will reunite three former players. 

Chris Banks of Westborough, MA (born December 6, 1987) played for Cape Cod Crusaders (2008) then for MPS Portland Phoenix during their 2010 season in the USL PDL, the forward netting 9 goals in 11 appearances. Banks then played for Wilmington Hammerheads in the USL Professional Division in the 2011 season including his first two professional goals on May 14, 2011 in a 3-1 win over F.C. New York. Banksy is returning to GPS Portland Phoenix for the 2012 Campaign. 

Nathaniel (Nano) Short of London, England (born January 28, 1985) also played for the Cape Cod Crusaders in his College Years. Over the 2007-2008 Season the defender made 18 appearances and scored 2 goals. Nano played for Rochester Rhinos in the USSF Division 2 Professional League with 2 goals in 39 appearances and was named in the USL Pro All-Rookie Team (2010). In 2012 Short will be reunited with Massie who were team-mates with the Crusaders.

Jason Massie of Liverpool, England (born September 13, 1984) played for the Cape Cod Crusaders whilst at College then turned professional in 2009 when he signed with the Harrisburg City Islanders in the USL Second Division. Massie made his professional debut on April 18, 2009 in Harrisburg’s opening day 2-2 tie with the Richmond Kickers, and went on to make 13 appearances for the team. Massie rekindled his links with Crusaders and head coach Paul Baber signing to play with USL PDL expansion franchise MPS Portland Phoenix in the 2010 and 2011 Seasons. The midfielder made 16 Appearances and scored 5 goals in the 2011 Campaign making the PDL All-Conference Teams Eastern Conference. Massie will be returning Captain for the 2012 Season.

Our MCU Portland Phoenix U14 Girls Elite and U17 Girls were also in action at NEFC Preseason Tournament and College Showcases this weekend.

Schoenfeld and Gaul follow in the footsteps of former Phoenix player Ryan Thompson into the professional ranks. Thompson signed a professional deal with Irish side Shamrock Rovers who competed in the group stages on the 2011 UEFA Europa League alongside English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

The GPS Portland Phoenix competes in the Eastern Conference, within the North East Division, of the PDL against such clubs as Ottawa Fury, Vermont Voltage & New Hampshire Phantoms. The GPS Portland Phoenix will play their first game on Saturday May 12 when they play Vermont Voltage, 6pm kick off at Deering High School, Portland.

Boys Success

On the Boys side of the program - Our MCU Phoenix U18’s were in action this weekend also. They competed in the NEFC Preseason Tournament with a record of 1-0-2 for weekend, in a very competitive league including a win against Beachside Connecticut Ranked 17th in nation.

The Team won the NEFC Preseason Tournament in the Men’s U18 Championship Division, the top division for the tournament. Game results were:

MPS is an extension of Global Premier Soccer (GPS), which has properties in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Florida, Vermont, Rhode Island and Maine.  Each property provides a wide range of soccer products and services including camps, clinics, club programs, tournaments and leagues.  MPS will work alongside current Westbrook Soccer League staff and Board members to help grow the League into one of the region’s leading organizations.  Westbrook Soccer League and MPS will immediately focus on developing players and coaches and furthering relationships within the community. 

Westbrook Soccer League has two youth programs: In-House Recreational for children ages 3-13; and Travel, which provides a more-competitive and advanced environment for players ages 8-13.  Both programs are closely linked with the city’s middle and high school programs, meaning that kids ages 3-18 could benefit from this partnership with MPS.

Registration is now open at each of the locations where licensed coaches from the UK and Ireland will conduct programs with age specific curriculum for soccer players aged 3-14. The age specific curriculums include Adidas First Touch (3-4 years old), Adidas Kick Start (5-6 year olds), Adidas Rising Stars (7-9 year olds), Adidas Champions League (10-12 year olds) and Adidas Elite Player (13+ year olds).

The program locations are Portland, Saco, Scarborough and Auburn.

“The GPS training weekend allow GPS senior staff to asses each individual not only in a face-to-face environment but also in apractical setting with an on field coaching assessment,” said Dunbar.  “At GPS we pride ourselves on employing positive role models with the ability to provide high quality coaching. We are extremely pleased with the coaching quality and we look forward to the best crop of staff to date joining us in 2012.”

The standard profile of a GPS staff member is a UEFA B or FA Level 2 coach who has at least two years coaching experience.  The typical educational background of a GPS coach is an individual with a degree in either sports management or sports coaching who has a desire to forge a long-term career path in coaching.

On the heels of a highly successful boys ODP camp held this past week, the camp will run through Sunday, March 4. Participants will learn under the watchful eyes of some of the top coaches in North America who will provide instruction and evaluation under the direction of USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor, who has spent the past 18 years as a member of the U.S. National Staff and 25 years as an ODP coach.

Among the coaches participating will be University of South Alabama Head Coach Mike Varga, Troy University Head Coach Chris Bentley, former Stony Brook University, Brown University and University of Rhode Island coach Kim Dean, St. Michael’s College Head Coach Marcel Choquette, LSU Assistant Coach Brandon Gwin, former Eckerd College Head Coach Siggi Nagele, and former Greensboro College and Stony Brook University coach Doug Shank.

Players selected to attend the camp were identified as the top players in their birth year and among the top two percent of players in the Super Y-League. The ODP Program is a crucial component of the USL Super Y-League, offering the best players from the U13 to U17 age groups a chance to receive top-quality coaching and the opportunity to be scouted by U.S. National Team and college coaches.

MPS Portland Phoenix are proud to acknowledge Renae Staples, Alexis Elowitch and Mel Vangel in attendance at the Camp and will monitor all three’s progress. Select teams will be identified by the coaches for the 95/96 and 97/98 age groups and announced following the conclusion of the camp.

2012 PDL Schedule

Thirteen new teams have joined the PDL for 2012, including the Austin Aztex, Baltimore Bohemians, Boston Victory, CFC Azul, Chicago Inferno, FC Tucson, Ocala Stampede, Palmetto FC Bantams, Panama City Beach Pirates, Texas Dutch Lions, Southern West Virginia King’s Warriors, VSI Tampa Flames and Worcester Hydra.

Formerly MPS Portland Phoenix, we will play the 2012 campaign under the moniker GPS Portland Phoenix.

The PDL will feature 73 teams in four geographic conferences and nine divisions. The Eastern Conference features three divisions while the Southern, Central and Western Conferences feature two divisions each. PDL clubs will play 16-game schedules in 2012, eight home and eight away. The defending PDL champion Kitsap Pumas open their 2012 campaign on Friday, May 4, when they travel to play the Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23 at Swangard Stadium.

2012 will also see the return of Jason Massie as captain to the Portland Phoenix. The midfielder made 16 Appearances and scored 5 goals in the 2011 Campaign making the PDL All-Conference Teams Eastern Conference. The Senior at Cape Breton has made 11 appearances for the Capers and scored two goals.

The PDL (Premier Development League) is part of the United Soccer Leagues Soccer Pyramid and encompasses clubs from the USA, Canada & Bermuda.  The top U23 men’s league in North America, PDL featured 67 teams within four conferences across the United States and Canada in 2010. The PDL season consists of 16 regular season matches for each team, eight home and eight away, and provides elite collegiate players the opportunity to taste a higher level of competition while maintaining their eligibility.

The Phoenix are the current the New England Division regular season champions which is part of the Eastern Conference; competing against such clubs as Ottawa Fury, Vermont Voltage & New Hampshire Phantoms, the Phoenix ended with a record of 8wins, 3 losses and 5 draws.

Mass Premier Soccer senior staff member Graham Munro interviewed a total of 75 candidates at locations in Chester (University of Chester), Wycombe (Buckinghamshire New University), Leeds (Leeds Metropolitan University), Edinburgh (Easter Road Stadium), Belfast (University of Ulster) and Dublin (UC Dublin) for open positions at each of the eight franchises (Massachusetts, Maine, Florida, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Jersey and Rhode island).

Portland, ME, 1^st February 2012; Ten Global Premier Soccer (GPS) players attended the recent US Soccer Training Center for players from New England and Western NY held at Dana-Farber Fieldhouse at Gillette Stadium.

Max Diamond, Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu, Nico Pascual-Leone (MPS Bulldogs), Jonathan N’Dhoratsue (MPS Portland Phoenix) and Abdulkadir Haji (NHPSA Classics) attended the boys event on Saturday 28^th January while Nerida Montrond (MPS Lady Crusaders), Maggie McCabe, Stephanie Ribeiro (MPS Renegades), Mel Vangel and Alexis Elowitch (MPS Portland Phoenix) attended the girls event on the following day.

“The US Training Centers present an opportunity for our players to showcase their talents in front of US Soccer Youth National Team scouts while competing with and against the best players in the region,” said GPS Director of Coaching Peter Bradley.  “GPS has been represented in US Youth National teams by Tommy Redding, Abuchi Obinwa and Guy Kabala in recent months and we look forward to witnessing more of our players compete at the highest levels of the game.”

U.S. Soccer Training Centers are single day, invitational training sessions run by U.S. Soccer staff for elite players in key soccer markets.  Training Centers are open to the top players from any team, club or organization at no cost to the player. The purpose of the Training Center program is to identify the best players for the U.S. Soccer Youth National Team program.

Vermont Premier Soccer will launch a wide range of soccer products and services including camps, clinics, coach education and club programs to Towns, Recreation Departments and clubs throughout Vermont. The full time coaching staff from VPS will work with, complement and enhance the soccer experiences of players in Vermont.

VPS will also institute a vertically integrated player development model that caters for development from the age of 4 - 18 years. Commencing in 2012, players will enter an integrated system from an early age with a clear development pathway, working with our professionally licensed coaches and an age appropriate curriculum. This will lead to an improved player development system and the appropriate development environment for these players.

The School of Excellence (SOE) Program was launched by GPS founding organization Massachusetts Premier Soccer (MPS) and currently has over 1100 players enrolled in the system in MA.  The SOE program is geared towards dedicated and talented individuals who are looking for advanced soccer training with similarly talented peers and is unique in terms of full-time licensed professional coaches conducting a club wide structured curriculum.  The SOE program was designed to supplement, as opposed to replacing, local club and recreational programs. The success of the MPS SOE program has been highlighted by producing two national team/pool players in recent years. VPS will be implementing a similar program in 2012.

VPS Director of Soccer Paul Baber reaffirmed “We are excited about our new franchise and we look forward to having an impact on the player development environment in Vermont.  We will be active through the spring meeting with various soccer programs and will launch programming in the summer.”

PANAMA CITY, Panama, 26^th January 2012; A former FC America Premier Team player made his international debut this past weekend as part of Jurgen Klinsmann’s USMNT side that defeated Venezuela 1-0.

Graham Zusi started the contest and featured againagainst Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City. Zusi scored off of a Teal Bunbury rebound to give the U.S. a 9th-minute lead and what would ultimately prove the game-winner.
“It is exciting to see former FC America players perform at the highest levels of the game,” said FPS General Manager Alan Hough. “Graham represents a positive role model for every young player in the club.” 
 
After completing his youth career at FC America, Zusi played college soccer at the University of Maryland. During his college career, Zusi helped Maryland win the National Championship in 2005 and 2008, scoring the game-winning goal in the 2008 National Semi-Final and Championship Games.

Kabala, who was recently accepted to the US National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, FL, is a product of the NHPSA Classics Premier Team program and was recently selected as part of the US youth national team to represent the US in the International Friendlies held at the Lakewood Ranch complex in Florida and screened live on Fox Soccer Channel.

McCabe, who entered the GPS player development system at 9-years-old as part of the Mass Premier Soccer Bay State West School of Excellence program, graduated into the MPS Bulldogs Premier Team program before being invited to the US Residency Program in 2011.

Kabala and McCabe join Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu (MPS U17 Bulldogs) who was named the #60 collegesoccernews.com top recruit for the class of 2013.
