Now comes the second step: choosing who you will entrust with the huge responsibility of being your personal trainer. In this post we are going to give you some tips to make this task easier.

The figure of the personal trainer goes far beyond someone who guides the training of our partners. It does not matter your previous sports career or your level of physical condition. They will know how to adapt to you and your goals at all times. That’s one of the big differences.

When you hire a personal trainer, you are hiring a professional who will keep you up to date on the latest fitness developments and trends; someone who will help you find the best workout to achieve your goals sooner.

Someone who will motivate you on your way by teaching you new exercises and new ways to train; someone who will study your progress with you, who will commit to it just like you do; and someone who will be there to give you an extra push when you need it.

A personal trainer is also the best company if you want to recover from an injury. Adapting your physical exercise, safely, with constant measurement of your progress, is one of their areas of expertise and one of the reasons why our partners come to their services.

Now that we have reviewed what the main benefits of having a personal trainer are, let’s review some previous issues you should consider when choosing yours:

Set achievable goals:

Setting goals is important, but setting achievable goals is crucial. Consider how much time you can invest each day, week and month, and how soon you would like to reach your goals. Personal trainers work best with specific goals, such as: I want to lose 10 pounds before my summer vacation!

While weight loss is a common goal in our clubs, there are many other milestones worth working towards. Toning your body, improving your mobility, increasing your speed or endurance, building your muscles or increasing your flexibility are just a few examples.

He watches the personal trainer with his clients:

What kind of exercises do they practice? Is the trainer motivated or does he seem bored? Does the client seem to be suffering excessively and having fun?

Ask for a consultation:

Any personal trainer will begin their relationship with you at an initial orientation to answer your questions, discuss your goals, answer questions and set training guidelines. Before this first orientation, it’s best to prepare a list of all the questions you’ll have – don’t keep any of them to yourself! Remember that asking for help is wise.

Use the time you spend with him or her in the first contacts to get to know each other a little better and see if that feeling comes up that is necessary for the relationship to work – just like on first dates!

You’ve probably already seen the different personal trainers in your club working with other members in the room. And I’m sure you’ve already got your favorites for how they treat their students, for how they get involved in training, for how they talk, for how they’ve smiled at you at some point… Don’t feel bad. Invest a little time getting to know them all until you find your ideal profile.

  • Why did you decide to go into fitness?
  • What is your experience and motivation to be a personal trainer?
  • Do you like to keep up to date with the latest trends? Do you recycle your knowledge regularly?
  • What do you do to lead a healthy life and stay in shape?
  • What are your fees? Do you have any bonuses or specific plans?
  • What is the desired frequency of sessions and how long do they last?
  • What times are you available?
  • What would a short, medium, and long-term plan look like for me?

Ask for references

You can talk to other members who already work with a personal trainer or with the club manager at the gym to find out what other members think about different personal trainers.

We all have our preferences! In addition to having a better idea of the trainer you have in mind, your club manager can recommend personal trainers based on your goals and time availability.

Gender issue

It’s not a big factor for everyone, but some people do consider it when they want to hire a personal trainer. If you feel more comfortable working with a different sex personal trainer, it’s a good idea to ask your gym manager if the trainer you have in mind has experience working with the opposite sex.

Choosing a personal trainer requires a little research and patience. However, it’s worth the effort to choose a suitable personal trainer because, to a large extent, your success will depend on this process.
